The Basics of Monitored Natural Attenuation

Course Description:

This four-hour course will introduce LSPs to the underlying concepts of monitored natural attenuation (MNA) as a remediation option for soils and groundwater. 

MNA is the application of naturally-occurring physical, chemical, and/or biological processes to reduce the mass, toxicity, mobility, volume, or concentration of contaminants in soil or groundwater without human intervention. Such attenuation is closely monitored using various sampling methods and statistical analysis of results to assess if natural attenuation: 1) has already occurred, 2) is still occurring at an appreciable rate, 3) will continue to occur at an appreciable rate, or 4) will allow attainment of remediation goals in a timely manner (compared to other active remediation methods like soil excavation or pump and treat for groundwater). 

The course will present descriptions of the various modes of natural attenuation, monitoring requirements and methodologies, and a review of major contaminant groups and their specific MNA characteristics and expected modes of attenuation.  In addition, the last hour of the course will include presentation of case studies of the use of MNA at a few sites including a fuel site and a chlorinated solvent site.
