Course Program Information
Many environmental projects require frequent communication with stakeholders through meetings, reports, letters, and one-on-one conversations. Communicating about chemicals in the environment can be particularly challenging due to the public’s perception of health risk of the unfamiliar and lack of trust in scientists and engineers. Poor communication skills can result in adversarial stakeholder relationships, delays, cost overruns and other unforeseen changes, and increased stress for project staff, and potentially even derail a project altogether. Thus, the importance of solid communication skills is imperative for running site investigation and cleanup projects smoothly and efficiently.

This short course will introduce practical risk communication principles and techniques for LSPs and other environmental practitioners. Participants will learn what effective risk communication looks like in environmental settings, how to understand and engage diverse audiences, and how to build trust with stakeholders when addressing complex or sensitive environmental issues. The course will cover key messaging and planning strategies, along with practical approaches to oral and written communication, data visualization, and the use of social media. Real-world case studies will highlight common challenges and effective solutions, and the session will conclude with an interactive Q&A session to help participants apply concepts to their own work.
