Soil Classification Training with a Focus on Historic Fill

Event Description Join us for an interactive event at Verdantas in Holden, MA. During this event, attendees will have the opportunity to gain insights on soil classification with a focus on historic fill, participate in an interactive demonstration of soil samples, and network with peers.
Presentation topics will include:
- General overview of soil classification
- Overview of draft MassDEP guidance document - Historic Fill / Anthropogenic Background
- Site conditions/history (i.e., where you may anticipate or find fill)
- Types of fill
- Visual observations of fill
- Asbestos in fill
- The use of microscopy to identify wood ash or coal ash
- Recognizing the difference between excavation backfill, native soils, and urban fill
Event Schedule:
- 5:30-6:00 PM: Networking Reception (food and beverage will be served)
- 6:00-6:45 PM: Soil Classification with a Focus on Historic Fill Presentation
- 6:45-7:30 PM: Interactive Demonstration / Examples of Fill
