Course InformationVapor intrusion has become a significant environmental concern. This course will provide an overview of vapor intrusion investigations, with a focus on sampling techniques, analytical methodologies, instrumentation, and quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) considerations. Instructors will review sampling techniques, including the use of Summa canisters and flow regulators, polyurethane foam (PUF) cartridges, hopcalite tubes, and MCE cassettes, as well as grab, integrated, and restricted sampling approaches. Applications for indoor air, ambient air, sub-slab, and soil gas sampling will also be discussed. In addition, instructors will examine sampling hardware, with an emphasis on Summa canister techniques, common sampling challenges and pitfalls, and potential solutions. Sorbent-based sampling media and their applications will also be discussed. Analytical methods covered will include EPA Method TO-15 (volatile organic compounds using Summa canisters), TO-13 (semi-volatile compounds using PUF media), TO-10 (PCBs in air), the Massachusetts Air-Phase Petroleum Hydrocarbon Method (MA APH), and other air sampling methods utilizing tubes and cassettes. Many of these methods are included in the EPA Compendium of Methods for the Determination of Toxic Organic Compounds in Ambient Air. Additional course topics will include compound lists, detection limits, regulatory criteria, and project-specific analytical requirements, and instructors will provide an overview of analytical instrumentation from sample introduction through quantitative analysis and data review, including gas chromatograph/mass spectrometers, cryogenic concentrators, dynamic dilution systems, and autosamplers. Canister cleaning and certification procedures will also be reviewed, including batch-certified and individually certified canisters, as well as individually certified sampling trains using advanced technologies such as heat and molecular drag pumps. QA/QC topics will include analytical performance criteria, reporting qualifiers, and the evaluation of common background ambient air detections. This course will provide LSP’s with a practical understanding of vapor intrusion sampling methods, analytical techniques, and data quality considerations that are critical for evaluating vapor intrusion under the MCP. By understanding the capabilities and limitations of current sampling and analytical methods, LSP’s can make more informed decisions regarding site characterization, risk evaluation, and regulatory compliance.
