This membership meeting presentation has been approved by the LSP Board of Registration for 1.0 Technical LSP credit.

Presentation Description:
Many in-situ remedial technologies for petroleum hydrocarbons can have performance challenges due to short product lifespans, difficulty in injecting and attaining aquifer coverage, or both. Short product lifespans also mean that contaminant back diffusion can frustrate reaching low cleanup targets. This presentation describes a self-applied, microscale activated carbon remedial fluid with nitrate and sulfate salts serving as electron acceptors. This remedial fluid is specifically designed to treat hydrocarbon contamination and provides remediation practitioners with a technology that has a multi-year lifespan and easily distributes in the subsurface to attain contaminant contact. To date, thirteen PetroFix projects have been applied in Massachusetts.

The program will cover the following topics:

  • How the technology works.
  • Best practices and fundamentals of in-situ remediation to help ensure that practitioners can achieve the best results.
  • Overview of size, scope, and other features of PetroFix projects in Massachusetts.
  • Case studies highlighting PetroFix performance including some drawn from Massachusetts and how these projects overcame site challenges.
  • Q & A
