Presentation Description:
One of the main findings of the violations in MassDEP’s Bureau of Waste Site Cleanup Notices of Noncompliance (NONs) is the omission of the evaluation of an emergency utility worker exposure scenario within submitted MCP Method 3 risk characterizations. The LSPA’s Technical Practices Committee asked risk assessors to form a work group to review available guidance on utility worker acute exposure pathways. The group reviewed existing guidance, contacted MassDEP’s Office of Research and Standards (ORS) to discuss the guidance, and created two flow charts to aid LSPs, risk assessors, and other waste site cleanup professionals in evaluating the acute exposure pathway for emergency utility workers.

The first part of the presentation, presented by Andrea Eagan of Woodard & Curran, will provide an overview of the key considerations for evaluation of emergency utility workers in the risk characterization and in support of permanent site closure. The second part of the presentation, presented by Marie Rudiman of EnviroRisk Solutions, will highlight some of the challenges in evaluating acute risks posed to emergency utility workers and will introduce the flow charts that were developed as tools for use during this process.

The program will wrap up with a 20-minute Q&A session with our panel of risk assessors; registrants will be encouraged to bring questions on this topic or any other.
