PFAS in New England: An Assessment of Distribution Data from R egulated Sites, Jonathan D. Kitchen, PG, LSP, CEC Inc.
CEC h as recently completed a literature review to better understand the types of PFAS releases in New England. Empirical information was collected on a var iety of parameters including PFAS plume length and area, the status of inve stigation and remedial activities, the maximum concentrations of regulated PFAS compounds detected in groundwater and soil proximal to the source site s, and the industry/source type at each location.
The results of the review will be presented, including analysis of PFAS distribution at regul ated sites in New England to identify and understand trends.

Evaluation of the relative composition of individual PFAS compounds in surface water and groundwater samples can be an effective method to identify and differentiate source(s) of PFAS. Compar ison of chemical fingerprints in samples collected from surface water and g roundwater located downstream and downgradient of contaminated sites may ap pear to be the same simply because of the suite of analytes chosen for fing erprinting. However, chemical signatures in combination with fate and trans port must be considered during forensics source identification. Attendees w ill receive an overview of the efficacy and limitations of using PFAS analy tes as fingerprints for source identification, delineation, and ultimately cost allocation with a specific focus on aqueous film forming foam (AFFF).
