In Memoriam: Kristina Comley Washer (1995-2025)

We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Kristina Comley Washer, a thoughtful and driven environmental scientist, on June 9, 2025. Kristina was a member of the LSPA from 2021 to 2023 and, in June 2022, she was awarded an LSPA Scholarship. You can read more about Kristina’s life and work here.

Contribution to the Practice Awards 

The LSPA Board established the Contribution to the LSP Practice Awards to recognize outstanding individuals and organizations, and their contributions in the field of hazardous waste site cleanup in Massachusetts. Each year nominations are sought from the LSPA membership, and recipients are selected from a variety of categories of service to the Association and the profession. Nominations are reviewed by the LSPA Board. 

Award categories include: LSPA Member, LSPA Service, Contribution to the Practice, Environmental Justice, Lifetime Achievement. Learn more about these awards here.

LSPA Legislation on Home Heating Oil Spills

Over 500,000 Massachusetts homeowners are at risk because insurance does not cover the cost of cleaning up home heating oil spills. The LSPA is working with state legislators to require that insurers automatically provide specialized liquid fuel release coverage to all homeowners.

The LSPA has, once again, filed our bill in the House and Senate (H1302 and S813, respectively). The bill passed the Senate twice, but has not moved beyond the House Committee on Ways and Means. On June 24, 2025, the LSPA testified during the Joint Committee on Financial Services.
