Course Description:
Contaminated sediment sites are notoriously heterogeneous, often encompassing a wide variety of environments and site conditions. Developing an effective remedial plan that is implementable, affordable, and applicable to all areas is challenging. Site characterization uncertainties complicate matters further.

This course will present the fundamentals of contaminated waterway remediation, including site characterization, remedial strategies, and post-construction monitoring. The basics of natural recovery, enhanced natural recovery, environmental dredging, and capping as remedial strategies will be discussed, including Best Management Practices for residuals management, cap placement, sediment management, and other real-world construction considerations. The course will focus on developing constructible remedial strategies across a wide array of environments that provide long-term risk reduction. A model contaminated sediment site will be used to illustrate how different remedial strategies can be sewn together to reduce site-wide risk.

The course will cover the following topics and provide enough time for questions and answers throughout:

  1. Overview and basic concepts of why certain sediments get contaminated
  2. Site characterization/Conceptual site models
  3. Overview of Remedial Alternatives
  4. Sediment Removal
  5. Environmental Controls
  6. Cover/Capping
  7. Survey and Equipment Guidance
  8. Monitoring (Construction and Long-term)
