Mark your calendars! The LSPA Membership Meeting dates and locations for 2018-2019 have been announced. The LSP Association's membership meetings take place monthly from September through June in the Greater Boston area. Click here to view the schedule for the upcoming year.

Member meetings are also held in Springfield, MA about four times a year; the schedule is announced as meeting topics become available. The first meeting is September 13, 2018 "A Fresh Look at Brownfields Challenges and Opportunities"

Last month, the LSPA offered an 8-hr field course in the greater Falmouth, Massachusetts, area entitled, “Sediment, Surface Water, and Biota Sampling Methods to Support MCP Assessments.” This is a repeat course and each time it has been offered, we have received excellent rave reviews. Here are a few comments that we received after the June 2018 course:

MassDEP’s internship application period is open now through April 30. MassDEP is seeking a student (or team of 2 or more students) that would be interested in developing articles or mini-video documentaries about the history, decline and rebirth of some of the region’s brownfields (‘Brownfield Success Stories”). This internship will expose students to researching the history of disposal sites, learning about site cleanup assessment and technologies, and understanding Massachusetts cleanup process and regulations. (This position requires the type of due diligence research and report writing that would be required of a young environmental consultant). 

This internship may be a good fit for liberal arts students with a background in history or communication/journalism, as well as students in environmental science or the earth sciences. The internship is unpaid, but the hours can be part-time and flexible. 

The LSPA could not have asked for better weather for our early November field course, Glacial Geology of Northward Flowing Watersheds, taught by Brian Yellen. The Nashua, Assabet, and Sudbury watersheds all drain north, resulting in unusual glacial landforms and stratigraphy in the Harvard, Massachusetts area. The 8-hour course format was a bus tour with short walks to view a variety of glacial landforms, and participants also enjoyed lunch at a local restaurant.

Here are some photographs from last night’s event, Drilling 101, which was held at Technical Drilling Services (TDS) in Sterling, MA. TDS demonstrated various drilling and monitoring well installation methods used commonly throughout the industry. TDS also provided equipment and technique demonstrations. We had a great turn-out and would like to thank the LSPA Young Professionals Committee for organizing this fabulous event!

The Massachusetts Association of Conservation Commissions (MACC) will be holding its Annual Environmental Conference 2017 on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. For the first time, the MACC Annual Environmental Conference (AEC) will include a college student poster session. The poster session is an opportunity to promote and highlight your thesis work, special project, etc., to the more than 700 expected attendees at the conference. The MACC seeks poster submissions from college undergraduate and graduate students. Click here to learn more.

LSPA Scholarship Fund Awards Scholarship for Environmental Education to Eric Gulbicki of Cooperstown Environmental

Belmont,  Mass. (July 25, 2016) – The LSP Association (LSPA) Scholarship Fund awarded one of its 2016 educational scholarships to, Eric Gulbicki, a North Reading resident and rising senior at Plymouth State University in Plymouth, New Hampshire. Eric plans on using the scholarship funds for his undergraduate studies in Environmental Science; he has an expected graduation in May 2017.  

Last week Phillips Academy, one of the oldest American private schools, hosted their annual (MS)² Career Fair. The (MS)² program was instituted in 1977 as an outreach program offering summer academic scholarships to African American, Latino and Native American public high school students.

Isaac Anderson, former Chair of the LSPA’s Technical Practices Committee and Project Manager at Cooperstown Environmental, was invited to speak with students about careers in Environmental Science and what it takes to become an LSP.
