Presentation Description: The title of Dr. Boutt’s 25-minute presentation is “The Development and Application of a Groundwater Flow Model for Massachusetts: A Tool for Quantifying and Understanding Groundwater Rise.” This talk will introduce the problems associated with groundwater shoaling, defined as a short to medium term rise in the water table. To understand the spatial distribution and probability of groundwater rise in Massachusetts, Dr. Boutt’s team developed a 3D groundwater flow model for the entire contiguous state. Simulation results will be presented and discussed in the context of changes in water storage and water availability. Mr. Mitchell’s 25-minute talk is on “Sustainable Approaches to Environmental Laboratory Analyses” and will present a fully implemented and environmentally sustainable process for analysis of materials of concern that results in a significantly reduced environmental impact associated with the field collection activities, shipping of material to the analytical laboratory, and analysis of the material for investigatory or regulatory reporting. Validated laboratory data providing for adherence to the documented regulatory requirements using more sustainable procedures will be discussed. Using these validated and approved procedures may reduce the environmental impact from sampling and analysis programs by as much as 90%. These reductions can be measured and reported, documenting advances in client efforts to reduce their environmental impact. Schedule: Thank You to Our Meeting Sponsor!
