LSPA February 2021 Membership MeetingRadon as an Environmental Tracer for Geological StudiesWhen: Tuesday, February 9, 2021
This membership meeting presentation has been approved by the LSP Board of Registration for 1.0 Technical LSP credit (#1722). Presentation:
The use of radon as an environmental tracer can be helpful to environmental professionals in many applications. This presentation will cover two of these applications: vapor intrusion assessment and NAPL plume delineation. Environmental professionals use radon as a tracer gas for volatile organic compound (VOC) vapor intrusion. Radon data can also be used to locate potential points of soil gas entry. Radon can also be used to locate, delineate, and monitor remediation of NAPL (non-aqueous phase liquid) contamination. Radon gas has a strong affinity to NAPL which makes it applicable as a naturally occurring partitioning tracer for assessing residual NAPL contamination of aquifers. The US EPA has published studies and reports on these uses. Additionally, geologists for years have used radon as a tracer for studying groundwater/surface water interactions. This presentation will describe how radon is used as a tracer in these various applications, review examples from published studies and reports using the DURRIDGE instrument and technology, and present case studies. There will be time set aside at the end of the webinar for Q & A. 3:45 PM Welcome and Announcements
