Coming Soon - LSPA Ballot for 2018 Board Election

Voting will open on Friday, May 18, 2018 for the 2018-2019 LSP Association (LSPA) Board of Directors election. Board positions will take effect July 1, 2018. 
 
Ballots will be sent by email to all LSPA members, both Full and Associate. We encourage all members to vote.
 
The LSPA's 9-member Board of Directors is composed of LSPA members who combine experience in environmental work with a passion for supporting and promoting the LSP practice. Current LSPA Board members are shown here.
 
Provided below are the candidates on this year's ballot. There were no members who petitioned to be on the election ballot. 
 
Two 3-year positions, 2018 - 2021:
  • David Leone, LSP, Associate Principal, GZA GeoEnvironmental, Norwood, MA.  David Leone is a longtime member of the LSPA Regulations Committee, including having served as the Co-Chair from 2014 to 2017.
  • Charles Young, LSP, Associate and Senior Environmental Project Manager, Stantec, Quincy, MA.  Charles has been Co-Chair of the Member Services & Program Committee for the past eight years, and also active in planning LSPA's annual dinner and other events. 
The Board of Directors believe that these two candidates have demonstrated their commitment to the Association and are well-positioned to ensure its continuing success.

New Board members will be announced at the LSPA monthly membership meeting on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at the Holiday Inn in Taunton, MA, from 6:00 - 8:00 PM.

Record-Breaking Attendance at Western MA Membership Meeting

LSPA’s Western Massachusetts Committee had a record-breaking number of attendees at its membership meeting on Monday, January 29. 

We would like to thank our speakers of the evening: Mr. Jason Barroso, Waste Management, Inc.; Mr. Hugo DelRosso, US Ecology and Ms. Eva Tor, Bureau of Waste Site Cleanup, MassDEP’s Western Regional Office. The speakers addressed the topic of Waste Management Considerations for MCP Projects to an audience of 60+.

LSPA 24th Annual Dinner Meeting

The LSP Association’s Board of Directors hosted over 300 attendees at this year’s LSPA Annual Dinner at the Lowell Inn & Conference Center in Lowell, Massachusetts. It was a wonderful night and great to see so many LSPA members, clients, and friends. The LSPA received impressive sponsorship support, presented a thought-provoking speaker, and the LSP Association Scholarship Fund was the recipient of generous donations through its silent auction.

LSPA Members Appointed to LSP Board of Registration

LSPA Members Fill Two Vacancies at LSP Board of Registration
 

Congratulations to long-time LSPA members, Gregg McBride and Marc Richards, for their recent appointments to the LSP Board of Registration of Hazardous Waste Site Cleanup Professionals (aka The LSP Board). Gregg McBride fills the LSP in manufacturing seat and Marc Richards was appointed to the LSP at large seat. Please see below for more information on our new Board members!

With these two new appointments, one vacant seat remains on the 11 member Board of Registration. Three Board members must be members of "statewide organizations that promote the protection of the environment" at the time of appointments and who are knowledgeable with respect to issues involving responding to releases of oil and hazardous materials." One of these environmental seats is vacant and has been for over three years.

LSPA Legislative Updates - October 2017

The LSPA is preparing to testify on S. 534, an act relative to the remediation of home heating oil releases. Senate Bill #534 was authored by the LSPA to enhance the current law by requiring coverage be provided to homeowners and raising coverage limits to keep pace with rising remediation costs. This bill will be heard by the Joint Committee on Financial Services in mid-October.

LSPA Announced Leadership Changes to Board of Directors

The LSP Association (LSPA) is announcing leadership changes to the Board of Directors as well as the appointment of two new Board members. These changes took effect on July 1, 2017 and were announced to the membership at the LSPA monthly meeting, held on June 8, 2017 in Westborough, MA.  

Marilyn Wade, LSP, Managing Engineer for Brown and Caldwell, has been appointed President of the LSP Association (LSPA). Wade is currently serving a second term on the LSPA Board of Directors. During her previous term, she served as President-Elect and Treasurer. 

Jeanine Grachuk, Esq, a Partner and Environmental Attorney with Beveridge & Diamond, P.C. of Wellesley, MA, will begin serving her second 3-year term on the Board of Directors and will continue to serve as Clerk.

LSPA Requests Nominations for the 2017 Contribution to the Practice Awards

The LSP Association requests your nominations for our 2017 "Contribution to the Practice" Awards, to be presented at our Annual Dinner Meeting on Thursday, October 26, 2017.

If you know of a deserving candidate and wish to nominate the person and/or organization, please email Kristi Lefebvre, LSPA Communications Manager, at [email protected] with the nominee's name, award category and supporting materials. The deadline for nominations is Tuesday, August 1, 2017.    
 
Nominations are solicited in the following categories:
  • The LSPA Member Award is presented to an LSPA Member in recognition of leadership, commitment, and contributions to the LSPA organization and membership over the previous year.
  • The LSPA Service Award is presented to an individual or organization in recognition of service to/support of the LSP Association and its mission; service may be in the form of in-kind services, financial or other support. This award is for service over the previous year.
  • The Contribution to the Practice Award is presented to an individual or organization from the public, non-profit, or private sector for outstanding contributions to the practice and advancing the profession over the previous year. Attributes may include creativity in balancing economic development with environmental values, practical approaches to regulatory compliance, and innovative initiatives in technology and sustainability.
  • The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to an individual in recognition of distinguished and continued contributions over 25 years or more to the advancement of science, standards, or professionalism in the field of site assessment and remediation under MGL c. 21E. The awardee must:
    • Be an LSP or someone in the supporting professions, and
    • Demonstrate commitment to the LSPA. This might include participation in the LSPA at a leadership level, e.g. founding member, committee chair, Board member or officer; or partnership with the LSPA through leadership level participation in a related organization.
Nomination applications should include the following:
  • The name and affiliation of the nominator and his or her relationship to the nominee.
  • For individuals, the name and title of the person and organization with which s/he is associated. For organizations, include the name and title of the key contact, and the specific name of the division, office, or department nominated. Be as specific as possible.
  • A narrative statement of no more than 2 pages describing the focus of the nomination and the nature of the contributions. The nominator will be contacted if the LSPA Board requires additional information.  
  • For the Contribution to the Practice Award, please include the names, affiliations, and contact information for at least three individuals who can attest to the contributions. 
The LSPA Board of Directors will review the letters of nomination and supporting materials for all nominees, and will contact references if appropriate. The Board will discuss and then vote on nominees. Awards are made at the sole discretion of the LSPA Board of Directors. Awards are not always made in each category. There may be more than one award presented in any category.
 
Over the years, these awards have been highly regarded by the recipients as well as LSPA members and colleaguesThe goodwill created by this program helps promote a positive image of LSPs and the Massachusetts privatized program.

Greener Cleanup Leadership Recognition Program 2017

Apply by June 30, 2017 for MassDEP's FY 2017 Greener Cleanup Leadership Recognition Program
 
MassDEP's Bureau of Waste Site Cleanup (BWSC) is sponsoring a Greener Cleanup Leadership Recognition Program to further promote cleanup approaches that consider all the environmental effects of assessing and remediating contaminated sites. MassDEP will recognize the person(s), entity, or project that demonstrates professional performance in the promotion, development, evaluation and implementation of activities intended to reduce the net environmental footprint of site assessment and remediation conducted in accordance with the MCP. 
Eligibility: 
  • Any response action submittal completed in accordance with applicable requirements of the Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP) in consideration of the "Greener Cleanup" elements prescribed at 310 CMR 40.0191 and, as applicable, at 310 CMR 40.0858. 
  • Any response action completed between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017.  
Submission for selection must be received by MassDEP no later than June 30, 2017
  • Nominate yourself or a colleague by emailing Thomas Potter and/or Susan Fessenden
    • Include: Release Tracking Number (RTN), submittal type/name, submittal date.
  • MassDEP will also independently review Response Action submittals

LSPA Presents to Massachusetts Association of Health Boards

LSPA Presents to Massachusetts Association of Health Boards

For the second year in a row, representatives of the LSPA presented a workshop at the annual training conference of the Massachusetts Association of Health Boards (MAHB). This conference is specifically targeted to elected and appointed Board of Health members in Massachusetts. Many health agents and public health nurses also attend.

On November 5, 2016, and again on November 12, 2016, the LSPA program, “Case Study of a Hazardous Waste Site Cleanup” was delivered in Taunton and Marlborough, respectively, as part of the Community and Environmental Health section of the conference. Presenters for the LSPA were Cosmo Gallinaro, LSP, LSPA Board Member, and Isaac Anderson, former Chair of the Technical Practices Committee (Nov. 5th), and Mike Penzo, LSP, LSPA President and Marilyn Wade, LSP, LSPA President Elect (Nov. 12th). Each session drew about a dozen engaged registrants with real, immediate issues and concerns.

LSPA Presenting at MAHB Certificate Program

The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health is partnering with the Massachusetts Association of Health Boards (MAHB) to host a MAHB Certificate Program. The LSPA has been asked to present at these workshops. This is the only training program that is specifically targeted to elected and appointed Board of Health members. Many health agents and public health nurses also attend, and MAHB provides registered sanitarian, CHO and nursing CEUs.

A member of the LSPA since 1998, Pat is a Senior Project Manager with EnviroTrac. He has been an environmental consultant for 24 years and an LSP for 18 years. Pat holds a Bachelors degree in Chemistry Engineering from the University of Toronto. Pat has managed a wide range of environmental assessment and remediation projects for major petroleum retailers, industrial manufacturers and other commercial clients, developers, attorneys, insurance companies, and public organizations. He is also a Grade 6 licensed wastewater treatment operator.

Matt, a Senior Project Manager in the Environmental Affairs Department of Cumberland Farms, Inc. (CFI), has worked in the environmental industry for over 11 years as an environmental consultant/scientist and environmental project manager. At CFI, he is responsible for managing and collaborating with a team of consulting firms on a portfolio of varied projects in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine. These projects include investigation and remediation of impacted properties, investigating and analyzing real estate transactions, and supporting new store construction through remediation, risk reduction, and soil management practices.

Election results are in for the LSPA's Board of Directors.  Marilyn Wade, LSP,  Brown & Caldwell, was re-elected for a second term.  Marilyn currently serves as the LSPA Treasurer.  Two new Board members were elected:  Patrick Corcoran, LSP, EnviroTrac, and Matthew Young, Senior Project Manager, Cumberland Farms. They were each elected for three year terms and will take office on July 1, 2016.  They will replace outgoing Board members, and Past Presidents, Matt Hackman and Paul McKinlay.  Click here for more information about these new Board members.

The LSPA membership has elected Susan O'Brien, LSP of Amec Foster Wheeler, for a first term on the LSPA Board.  Two current Board members were re-elected for second terms:  Mike Billa, LSP of Tetra Tech, and Mike Penzo, LSP, Consulting Hydrogeologist.  They were each elected for three year terms and will take office on July 1, 2015.
