LSPA Soliciting Your Comments on the State's Climate Resilience Design Standards and Guidelines Project

The LSPA's Climate Change (CC) Subcommittee of the Technical Practices Committee is, among other things, working to identify questions and issues that might be helpful to MassDEP as they develop guidance on proposed climate change regulations as presented in the 2019 Draft MCP Amendments.

The Subcommittee recently became aware of a public comment period on the Resilient MA Action Team's (RMAT's) Climate Resilience Design Standards and Guidelines Project. Click here for more information.

The Subcommittee is soliciting your input on the Climate Resilience Design Standards and Guidelines Project. Please send your comments to [email protected] by no later than Monday September 28, 2020. The project sections for review are below.

Although the formal comment period deadline of September 9, 2020 has passed, we have been informed by the Project Director at the MA Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, that if we submit comments by the end of September, the group will do their best to incorporate these into the revisions. If they are unable to, it's not too late as they intend to "pilot the first draft of the tool early next year once it's complete, and envision further opportunities for input."

This project aims to develop resilience standards, guidelines, and a project screening tool grounded in scientific methodology using the best available climate science data in Massachusetts, and that improves over time to incorporate new science, additional or changing climate hazards, and on-going stakeholder feedback.

The focus of this project is to integrate climate resilience in projects with physical assets owned and maintained by state agencies. When complete in early 2021, these tools will be accessible at ResilientMA.org, and are likely to become relevant to state grant-funded projects throughout the Commonwealth.

The LSPA's CC Subcommittee meets by videoconference every two weeks and invites you to join our group of about 15 people. Please don't hesitate to contact us for more information. Thank you.

Marilyn Wade, LSP and Cathy Rockwell, PE
Co-Chairs, LSPA Climate Change Subcommittee
